Vid Title: Iron
Vidder:
obsessive24
Fandom: Game of Thrones
Summary: Ned Stark and his family, over the course of season 1. I'm frozen to the bones, I am. (SPOILERS for the entire show so far.)
Warning: Contains some stark images of graphic violence and gore.
Reccer's Comments:
As a huge fan of both the books and the show, for all their myriad faults, I have eagerly been waiting for Game of Thrones fanvids. Alas, I have found far fewer really excellent ones than I hoped for: It has occurred to me that, due to the sprawling, even badly structured nature of the books, many interesting stories are currently hard or impossible to vid with the available footage. However, Ned Stark as the ostensible protagonist does have a clearly defined arc in the first season, and so I was really overjoyed to stumble upon the marvellous fanvid that focuses on the downfall of a fantasy hero and his house.
The music choice is perfect, both in the harsh, martial mood of the sombre tune to an instrumentalization with incessant beats, and the fitting, evocative lyrics. I love what the vidder does with the song: It's not a meta vid, a constructed reality, or anything of a similar complexity, but it's straightforward vidding at its best -- and I really don't mean this as "damning with faint praise" since I love well-made straightforward character studies in vid form. Iron draws us into a character's (increasingly dark and brutal) world and then going for the emotional jugular. Also, as an avid book fan, I very much appreciate some subtle foreshadowing through effective intercutting at 1:31-1:33, 1:44-1:46, 1:48-1:50, and 1:52-1:54.
