Finding new-to-you vids: Some resources

A few people indicated that a resource post about finding new vids would be useful. So here we go! (Details of new-to-you challenge still forthcoming). This post is a work in progress. If you have suggestions for additions, leave a comment or PM me.


1) Vidder catalogs
-- Masterlist of links to vidder catalogs - Links to many vidders' masterlists, including fandoms in which they have vidded.

2) Journal communities/Archives
-- vidding (Dreamwidth comm) - Includes vid announcement posts, tagged by fandom.

-- vidding (Livejournal comm) - Includes vid announcement posts, tagged by fandom. This comm is much older than the DW comm and has many, many vids to browse.

-- The LJ vidding comm's Giant list of fandom-specific vidding comms (scroll down) - More vid announcement posts, but in fandom-specific vidding comms. Vids will often be linked in these comms which are not necessarily linked in the general vidding comms, so check them out!

-- The Archive of Our Own (AO3) fanvid tag. Normally this tag can be further filtered by fandom so you can find vids for specific sources (as of September 2012 this tag filtering function is not currently working).

-- festivids (mirrored at festivids) – Annual small fandom vid exchange masterlists for all years

3) Convention vidshow playlists
**Note that con playlists will often include a download link only, or will include no link at all, but will just the name of the vid and the vidder. Googling the vid title and the vidder will often bring up a way to view the vid online, such as the vidder’s announcement post or website, or a streaming site. vidfinders may also be able to help you find a working link to a vid.

Vidding conventions
-- VividCon (vividcon/vividcon, website) - Most vids that have played at the con can be found in The VividCon Database (Searchable by fandom, vidder and vid show). VVC annual shows include premieres, nearly new, and themed shows.

-- VidUKon (vidukon_cardiff/vidukon) This newer, small vidding convention has been held twice and will be held again next year. I still need easily gathered links to individual playlists, but some are posted to the DW and LJ comms. Shows include premieres, nearly new, and themed shows.

Other cons
-- Con.txt (slash con, website) - Vidshow playlists for multiple years

-- Escapade (slash con, escapade_con, website) – Vidshow playlists for multiple years (I believe premieres are included here, but they are not marked as such on the lists)

-- MediaWest*Con (sci-fi con, website) – Video Competition Awards for multiple years

-- WisCon (feminist SFF con, wiscon_vidparty) – Vidshow playlists for past two years (includes premieres and nearly new, and themed shows)

There are probably many other ways to find new-to-you vids, but hopefully this is enough to be getting on with.

If you have resources to add, including links to con playlists that I wasn't able to find, please let me know! In general, I’m looking for resources that will enable people to easily browse for vids. So, for example, links to specific communities (either vidding specific, or with tags that allow people to filter for vid-related things) or links to con playlists (ideally with links for multiple years or shows), and not links to individual vids that may have played at a con.

Personally, I'd also suggest adding a link to the Fanvids tag on the AO3. It's a little hard to browse right now, since you can't narrow things down by tags, but once that's working again it should be very simply to find vids in fandoms you're familiar with.

There's also vidfinders on lj for finding vids that you remember seeing a long time ago (or for identifying vids that you downloaded a long time ago, but don't know who the vidder is).

Hmm I'll poke around it a bit more, but the focus of that comm seems different--the links here are for people looking for vids they haven't seen? But I might add a link to this comm so people know about it if they find titles and vidders of vids that they can't find a working link to. The comm seems like place that could help in that situation. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah, I looked at the comm info to see if "Rec me some good XYZ vids/where do I find all the ABC vids" would be on-topic or not, but I didn't see that addressed specifically.
